Uckfield Bus Station Works – August to October 2024

Uckfield Bus Station is set to undergo improvement works between August and October 2024 after a consultation that took place earlier in 2024.

The works will be undertaken by Balfour Beatty on behalf of East Sussex Highways. They have produced the following statement on the works:

“Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out improvement works to bus station in Bell Walk, Uckfield.

When do the works start?

“Works will take place from Monday 5 August 2024 to Friday 4 October 2024 between 7am and 7pm. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What do the works involve?

“These works involve footway and carriageway improvements to create a Mobility Hub for the whole community. The team will be carrying out both footway and carriageway treatments, including kerbing and paving to match the High Street. New crossing points and footways will also be constructed.

“Other works include:

  • Installation of two new shelters and one cycle shelter, with living vegetation roofs to aid biodiversity
  • Increasing capacity to accommodate four buses
  • Real-time passenger information signage
  • Upgraded street lighting and street furniture

“To enable the new bus station to operate efficiently, changes to parking restrictions will be implemented. A public consultation was held and advertised earlier this year.

How will this impact highway users?

  • Monday 5 – Friday 9 August: Minimal disruption to road users during crossing point installation.
  • Monday 12 – Friday 30 August: The bus station will be closed between the B2102 Bell Lane and Bell Walk for construction of the new Mobility Hub and carriageway surfacing.
  • Monday 2 September – Friday 4 October: Minimal disruption to road users during footway construction.

“If you need vehicle access, please discuss this with the team on site. Please bear in mind that there will be delays whilst the area is made safe and your vehicle is escorted by site marshalls. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Information for residents and businesses

Public Transport

“Alternative bus stops will be provided in Bell Lane. Signage will be in place to direct members of the public.

Parking

“We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.

Weather

“All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example, heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

“Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however, this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.
