Latest update on the Census 2021

We have received the following update from Harry Farmer, Census Engagement Manager – Eastbourne, Wealden, Rother and Hastings:-

We’re there now.  Census Day was on Sunday 21 March, though many people have already completed their forms, online and on paper, across the country, and we geared up for millions more to do so over the weekend.

ONS Census field officers started working on Tuesday 23 March. They will be calling at houses from whom we have not received a completed census.  That should avoid anyone who completed theirs online on Census Day and if one is still in the post the officer will annotate the record and not call back until time has passed for that form to be received and processed.  They will not be completing forms there and then with householders – ONS Census field officers will observe social distancing and never enter a house – but will be able to offer a wide range of support and advice, including arranging for replacement unique access codes, paper forms if they are needed and answering specific questions. They will also be able to point householders towards sources of help to actually complete the census with people who are struggling to do so themselves.

In this part of East Sussex, we are fortunate to have a range of resources:-

Census Support Centres

HOME CIC, Seaside Community Hub, 125 Seaside, Eastbourne, BN22 7NN  07720 854185e. [email protected]

Crossland and Dudson Training, 39-41 Upperton Rd, Eastbourne BN21 1LN  01323 720072 e [email protected]

Ethel Wood Community Centre, 129 Coast Road, Pevensey Bay BN24 6NS – 07879 691647 e. [email protected]

Sussex Support Service CIC, Victoria Pavilion Support Centre, Victoria Pleasure Ground, Uckfield, TN22 5DJ t.  01825 760176 e. [email protected]

These centres are currently offering a telephone completion service.  They hope to offer an in person service from 12 April, but that depends on Covid-19 restrictions.

There’s also the Census contact centre which can be contacted on 0800 141 2021.

There’s a lot of information at https://census.gov.uk/ There isn’t a search function but it is logically arranged and the guidance is very clear.

Finally a key resource for those who are struggling will be friends, family, carers and support groups, all of which have been essential for the vulnerable in our communities over the last year.  I know from your feedback that many of you have already helped individuals through both your pandemic support mechanisms and local knowledge and contacts, and will continue to do so over the next few weeks.
