Bus Station Upgrade Completed

Uckfield Town Council is delighted to announce the completion of a major upgrade to public transport facilities in the town.

On Friday, 1 November 2024, the newly upgraded Uckfield Bus Station was officially opened by representatives of Uckfield Town Council, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and Balfour Beatty.

The project’s completion has come after a process in which the Town Council has worked with Wealden District Council, organisers East Sussex County Council and the construction team from Balfour Beatty Living Places to bring the new Bus Station to fruition.

This included a public consultation phase in April 2024.

Funding for the project has come through development contributions, county council funding and money from the East Sussex Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

The Bus Station off Bell Lane now benefits from modern bus shelters with planted roofs and wireless charging points, enhanced real-time information, improved street lighting and a new cycle shelter.

Investment of more than £800,000 also funded a new loading bay, a new footway and crossing points along the south side of Bell Walk and benches and planters.

Cllr Claire Dowling, ESCC lead member for transport and environment, said: “I’m delighted with the transformation of Uckfield’s bus station and hope that it will encourage more people to use public transport.

“As well as improving the look of the area, the project has resulted in better facilities for passengers and the enhanced real-time information will help people better plan their journeys.

“It will also go some way to help with air quality in the area as the new bus and cycle shelter roofs are planted with drought-tolerant plants that absorb pollutants.”

Cllr Dowling added: “I’d like to thank the public for their patience while work was carried out and hope they can now enjoy the benefits.”

As part of the project, Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) have been introduced to better manage parking and vehicle movements in and around the bus station.
